Collateral Damage

2024 –2025

Collateral Damage is a group exhibition showcasing the work of senior art students at Grand Valley State University (GVSU). The show explores the unforeseen consequences of pursuing a creative life through art, reflecting the toll that the art-making process can take on the artist.

The exhibition presents a diverse range of media, including paintings, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, and photography. Its work highlights the resilience and tenacity required of those who dedicate themselves to an education in the arts. "Damage" in this context refers to the residual effects of growth, the process of becoming, a physical byproduct of forging an artistic identity in a world that often challenges creative expression.

Whether or not the viewer is a graduate of higher education, they are invited to reflect on the complexities and nuances of pursuing a creative path, emphasizing the journey, not just the destination. The exhibition asks, how are we shaped by the hardships and persistence required to endure life’s rigors?
